CREATIVE MINDS WITH MIKE WEDGE

Sunday, 29 September 2019 – 1:00pm to 3:00pmCREATIVE MINDS

Mike Wedge was born and raised in England as an established “self taught” graphic designer. Having worked his whole life in the Advertising Agency world, Mike moved to Vancouver in 1992. A car accident in 2008 left him permanently disabled with vertigo and oscillopsia. Not ever being someone to go down without a fight, he decided to relocate to Yarmouth in 2017 and taught himself photography, tried “art,” and flat out reinvented himself.

On routine walks along Pembroke Beach, the garbage really troubled him, so he decided to do something about it and repurposed it into something creative. He never calls himself an artist. “That’s for real talent,” he says, but considers art very much as therapy. Every photo he takes he tries to get to know the person, and they in turn get to know him, which lead him to launch: Human Kind Portraits.

You will be captivated by Mike’s passion about his crafts and the stories behind his pictures and reclamation art.

The goal is to create community engagement among seniors by celebrating the art traditions of the various cultures in our area.

May 27th – Painting Portraits a Garson event

As a part of the continuing celebration of Yarmouth’s Garson sisters and their contribution to art education in our community we enjoyed an “explore the portrait” event in the Community Room. Eleven would be portraitists teamed up under the guidance of Maggie Schmidt to try their hand. Teams od two and three played with their interpretation of a rough beginning sketch and photo for reference. Any resemblance to the photo is purely coincidental.

April 18, 2018 – Art from the Heart

The presentation of the Art from the Heart  project was well received by a full house audience in the Community Room at the gallery. The audience was most interested in the concept of the project and were interested in how such a pilot program might be expanded to meet the nerds of more youth. A number of questions were asked and there was lively discussion over refreshments.

April 28th, 29th 2018 – Garson Events

Erin Morton will be the guest speaker at a reception for our exhibit “Influence: the lessons of Trudy and Paula Garson“ on Saturday, April 28, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Yarmouth.

Erin was one of the kids growing up in Yarmouth who took group art lessons with the Garsons . She is now a professor at UNB, teaching courses that use art and cultural practice   “ as a launching pad to think about history as both an intellectual practice and a lived experience”.   Her new book “ For Folk’s Sake” looks at art and economy in 20th century Nova Scotia, and is dedicated, in part, to “Trudy and Paula Garson who inspired generations of weird art kids in Yarmouth”. Copies of her book will be available for purchase, courtesy of Coles in Yarmouth.   (Price is $45.00; cash only.)

Also, the following day , there will be an afternoon program from 2 until 4,”‘Sharing the Stories”. Former students and others who knew Trudy and Paula are invited to share their memories.   One special guest will be Burton LeBlanc, now the head of the make-up department for “The Handmaid’s Tale” .   Burton credits childhood classes with the Garsons for wakening and encouraging his artistic development.

People are also encouraged to bring artwork—either paintings by Trudy or Paula, or student work of their own, to show and talk about.   It will be an interesting and entertaining afternoon!

Hope to see you at one or both events!
