The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Yarmouth will be showing “Structures”, a textile art show, from March 15, 2016 to April 30, 2016 in the Community Room. This exhibition is produced the Atlantic Canada chapter of the international fibre arts organization SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates). Fabric artist Regina Marzlin (Antigonish, NS) is exhibition organiser and curator. Renowned painter and Mi’kmaq artist Alan Syliboy served as juror.
Visitors to the gallery will see a selection of twenty five artworks created by nineteen SAQA Atlantic Chapter members. It is a wonderful showcase of some of the finest textile art talent in the Atlantic Canada region. Artists include Penny Berens, Sandra Betts, Grace Butland, Nancy Elaschuk, Linda Finley, Lois Wilby Hooper, Susan Lilley, Heather Loney, Kate Madeloso, Regina Marzlin, HollyMcLean, Anne Morrell Robinson, Christine Nielsen, Rebecca Paterson, Deb Plestid, Ann Schroeder, Linda Strowbridge, Céleste Thibodeau-Stacey, and Susan Tilsley Manley.
This show invites viewers to enjoy a diversity of pieces with an interesting and unusual use of fabric in the broadest sense. The contemporary textile art pieces interpret the theme “Structures” in a wide range of styles and techniques, from abstract to pictorial, from monochromatic to colorful. The masterful use of luscious texture, sophisticated colour and clever manipulation of surface design are just a few of the defining elements of a fascinating medium that is increasingly popular and more and more accepted by the general art world.
There will be a complementary exhibition by the same artists about art quilting as an art form with additional finished pieces, works in progress, techniques and materials exhibits and information about the process.
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Yarmouth is the final stop on a year-long tour traveling to five different venues in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Please join the artists for an opening reception on March 12, 2016 at 2pm.
